Correspondence, account books, and miscellaneous notebooks pertaining to Dodge's political, business and personal life. The bulk of the letters are between Augustus Dodge and his wife, Clara (1841-1849), Dodge and Spain's minister of state (1857-1858), and Dodge and Lewis Cass, U.S. secretary of state (1857-1859). Typescript copies of 3 Senate bills are included. One of the bills seeks to grant right of way and land to the State of Iowa for construction of railroads. A second bill addresses the organization of the Territory of Nebraska. The third bill addresses the protection of an emigrant route, a telegraphic line and overland mail between the Missouri River and California and Oregon. Record books of personal expenses, land ownership, business affairs (mining in Montana and lead processing in Dodge's Grove, Wisconsin) and food bought in Spain as well as a scrapbook of newspaper clippings are included. Materials by others include a typescript article about the Kirkwood-Dodge political debates compiled by Jack Bladine, biographical notes by Louis Pelzer, and correspondence between Dodge's son, William W. Dodge, and Pelzer concerning the Dodge papers and books and Pelzer's biography of A.C. Dodge.
